Popcorn Contains More Antioxidants Than Fruits and Vegetables: The New Super Snack

Eating healthy just got a whole lot crunchier. A team of researchers from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania has found that popcorn contains more antioxidants than other fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are substances that many scientists believe help protect against cancer and heart disease. According to Joe Vinson, PhD, who presented the findings at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, "popcorn may be the perfect snack food." Vinson is known for his pioneering research on micronutrients in chocolate, nuts and other foods.

Although earlier research had already discovered antioxidants called polyphenols in popcorn, Vinson's study measured the exact amount and found that it contains about twice as many as fresh sweet corn or fruit per serving. Polyphenols are diluted up to 90% in most fruits and vegetables because of their high water content. They are more concentrated in popcorn because it only contains about 4% water. And those annoying hulls that get stuck between your teeth? "They are nutritional gold nuggets," declares Vinson. He points out that dried fruit also contains more antioxidants than fresh fruit based on the same principle.
The study also extols popcorn as a whole grain. "It's the only snack that is 100 percent unprocessed whole grain," says Vinson. "One serving of popcorn will provide more than 70% of the daily intake of whole grain. The average person only gets about half a serving of whole grains a day, and popcorn could fill that gap in a very pleasant way."
Vinson cautions against replacing fruits and vegetables, which contain many other important nutrients, with popcorn. He also warns that drowning it in butter or sugary flavorings is going to offset the nutritional benefits. To get your daily dose of antioxidants and whole grains, its healthiest to stick with plain, air popped corn. The second best option is microwave popcorn.

The YMCA has a new Pilot Swim Safety Program Teaches Drowning Prevention to Toddlers

Hillsborough County leads the nation in drowning deaths of children under the age of 4.
That’s an alarming statistic that the Tampa Y is doing something about.
Beginning this month, the Y will pilot the Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) program at the South Tampa Y. ISR is a water survival program that trains children as young as 6 months to float, rest, breathe and swim to the wall. The six-week program is taught five days a week for just 10 minutes a day by certified ISR instructors.
The South Tampa Y’s pilot program will be offered to children, ages 6 to 36 months, of first responders, such as firefighters and police officers. Most of these first responders have witnessed the devastating impact accidental drownings have on families.
After the pilot program runs at South Tampa, the Y will expand pilot programs to the Campo Family Y and the New Tampa Family Y.

For more information about the ISR program, please contact Adam Klutts at 813.839.0210.

5 Tips for Healthy Dental Foods and Treats for Dogs

Dogs treats are the best !!
But which ones are the best for your dog?

1.First, talk to your veterinarian. Your vet knows your canine pal well, and hopefully knows the state of your dog's mouth. If not, it's time your dog had an oral exam, dental X-rays, and a good cleaning done under general anesthesia (the only way to fully clean out infection and disease below the gum line). Once your dog's mouth is in good shape, ask your vet for their recommendations on which treats and chews can help you keep it that way.

2.Look for the VOHC seal. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) is an independent veterinary dental group that tests claims manufacturers make about their dental preventative products. It's "very similar to the American Dental Association, with regard to reviewing dental products," says Sharon Hoffman, DVM, DAVDC, a veterinary dentist in Jacksonville, Fla. After review, if a product is proven to help slow plaque and calculus formation, it's awarded the VOHC seal. While there are certainly good oral health products available that don't have the VOHC seal, says Tony M. Woodward, a veterinary dentist in Colorado and diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College, the seal can be a reassuring place to start.

3.Think dental diet-approved kibble and treats. Some dried foods and treats help keep your dog’s mouth in good form by scrubbing the teeth as your pet chews, while another group of foods include additives that help keep plaque soft so it doesn’t form tartar. Check with your vet to see if a dental diet should be part of your dog’s oral health maintenance.

4.Say yes to chew toys. Good chew toys can help slow dental disease by their abrasive action. A good toy is bendable, softer than teeth, and not so small it can be swallowed whole. Look for rubbery Kongs and balls, bendable bones, and chew toys you can hide treats inside. Some vets also give the thumbs up to thin, bendable rawhide. However, vets advise against thick, heavy rawhide "bones," which can break or fracture a dog's teeth, and may cause gastrointestinal problems if a dog swallows a large piece.

5.Look for approved mouth rinses. You can also slow the progression of gum disease in your pet's mouth with dental rinses. These liquids contain chlorahexidine or other additives. When squirted into your dog's mouth, the rinses are absorbed into the mouth’s soft tissue, where they kill bacteria. Such rinses are "really, really safe," says Woodward. Talk to your vet to determine if a rinse might be helpful for your pet's oral health

How to Decorate a New Apartment

Here are some great ideas on how spruce up your new home !!!

1: Look for clearance sales on new sofas and other upholstered furniture. Last year's fabrics may still appeal to you. Solid colored sofas and other seating for your living room offer more flexibility for your rugs, drapes and other accessories. The carpet color in your apartment influences the colors in your living areas. Most apartments have neutral carpet, but if yours is special, cover it with an oversized rug remnant that you can cut and fit for your space.

2 :Spruce up furniture that you find at your local thrift store or yard sale. Dining room or kitchen tables and chairs are simple to repaint or stain. Add cushions or staple fabric and batting to reupholster chair seats or turn a coffee table into an ottoman. Wooden furniture is simple to transform with a little paint and a bit of effort. Find a bed and dresser, refinish it and add a new mattress for a bedroom that will be completely new to you.
Shop your local sales or at online retailers for inexpensive drapes and curtains, or buy fabric and make your own. Sew a seam around the perimeter of the fabric and hang it on the window with clips and a rod. The drapes will break up the whiteness of the walls with a splash of color. They can also tie two rooms together if you have a dining area and living room combination with a window in between.

4: Create custom art for your walls by adding strips of painter's tape in a geometric or striped pattern to a canvas. Paint the canvas with acrylics and remove the tape for easy wall art. Hang a colorful sari, quilt or wall decal for a simple alternative to creating your own canvas.
5: Center your main seating area on the television, fireplace or a bay window and fill in with a coffee table and one or two end tables, depending on your available space. Add lamps and other removable lighting to create warmth and to brighten up the room. Large framed wall mirrors propped against an open wall add depth and dimension to the space. Hang a mirror behind a lamp to increase the light or to create an impact.

10 New Weight Loss Myths and Facts

Even though we all know that the best way to stay healthy and physically fit is to eat well-rounded, nutritionally sound meals and exercise for at least 20 minutes a day, it's human nature to seek out better, "cutting-edge," get-thin-quick fads and glom onto them like they're gospel. Don't eat after 8 p.m.? You got it. Wash down an acai berry with fish oil? Sign me up.

But what if those new fangled discoveries and quick fixes were steeped in misinformation and could actually be making you gain weight or harm your health? Oh, no thank you very much.

In an effort to clear the air and get back to solid basics, we decided to tackle the most prevalent weight loss "facts" out there and reveal them as the myths they are. See the 10 biggest weight loss myths and facts now.

ONE: EATING AFTER 8 PM IS A DIET DON'T

Myth or Fact: Myth

It's not when you eat, it's what (and how much) you eat. The reason some diets suggest you close the kitchen after enjoying the early-bird special is that people have a tendency to overeat at night, especially if they have skipped a meal during the day. "If you are finding yourself bingeing at night, chances are you are not eating anywhere near enough good calories during the day," says fitness and lifestyle consultant, Ashley Borden. Want to know what you can eat after 8? Click here.

TWO: A CALORIE IS A CALORIE IS A CALORIE

Myth or Fact: Myth

You gain weight when you consume more calories than your body burns. And yet, not all calories are the same. It's really the good carb/bad carb distinction. "Bad carbohydrates (refined simple sugars) are rapidly digested and absorbed into the bloodstream," celebrity nutritionist Paula Simpson explains. "If there is a high concentration of blood sugars (hyperglycemia), then [the excess sugars] can be stored as fat." The fiber in good carbohydrates helps slow down the rate of digestion, controlling blood sugar levels, which results in a longer window of time during which the body can burn the calories from those good carbohydrates before the excess is stored as fat. What are the good carbohydrates? Click here to find out.

THREE: DRINKING BROTH-BASED SOUPS BEFORE YOU EAT CAN HELP YOU FEEL MORE FULL AND, THUS, EAT LESS

Myth or Fact: Fact

A study conducted at Penn State University demonstrated that eating foods with a high water content increases one's sense of fullness. Interestingly, drinking water on its own has not been shown to have the same impact. Evidently, water is emptied out of your stomach more quickly than water incorporated into foods you eat, so it doesn't trigger any of the body cues that tell your brain you are full.

FOUR: IF YOU ARE ON A DIET YOU SHOULD AVOID RED MEAT AT ALL COSTS

Myth or Fact: Myth

You don't have to swear off red meat. Red meat, in moderation, is a great source of protein and iron.

Which kind of red meats should you order? Click here.

FIVE: ALL GRAMS ARE CREATED EQUAL

Myth or Fact: Myth

Remember the old riddle: What weighs more -- 100 lbs of brick or 100 lbs of feathers? They, of course, weigh the same, but the size of the feather pile would be much bigger than the stack of bricks. That analogy kind of helps when you think of grams of food: a gram of protein has four calories; a gram of carbohydrates also has four calories; but a gram of fat has nine calories. The difference in calories per gram is the reason why one food may have way more calories than an identical serving size of another. It's also the reason for the proliferation of low-fat and fat-free products. Limiting the number of grams of fat you consume each day makes it easier to stay in your caloric budget (and your skinny jeans).

SIX: OVER-THE-COUNTER WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCTS THAT ARE LABELED "NATURAL" OR "HERBAL" ARE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE

Myth or Fact: Myth

This was a gimme, right? Ephedra ring any bells? Just because you can buy something in a health food store doesn't mean it's healthy. Unless and until a product's claims have been evaluated by the FDA, you should be skeptical. And, in any event, it's worth consulting a physician before taking any drugs. Not all diet pills are unsafe. See which ones help block fat absorption and are FDA-approved here.

SEVEN: YOUR BODY HAS A BIOLOGICALLY PRE-DETERMINED SET WEIGHT AND ALL ATTEMPTS TO CHANGE IT WILL FAIL

Myth or fact: Myth

Blaming your grandparents for the yo-yo-ing you see on the scale isn't going to fly. "While our genetic heritage does play a role in our body composition," Simpson explains, "we can still have control … by leading an active lifestyle and eating well." And if you're pre-disposed to be skinny (lucky bee-och -- er -- duck?), you still ought to be eating right and exercising -- for your health.
The key to losing weight after you've hit a plateau: click here.

EIGHT: IF YOU'RE NOT SWEATING WHILE WORKING OUT, YOU'RE NOT WORKING HARD ENOUGH

Myth or fact: Myth

There is zero correlation between perspiration and weight loss. The only thing sweat signifies is that the body is working to cool itself off. Everyone sweats differently. And, anyway, it is not clear that working out for a shorter period at a higher intensity is better than working out for a longer duration at a lower intensity.
In terms of weight loss, what works best for your lifestyle and your schedule is what is going to work best -- because you'll stick with it. Your muscles will continue to burn calories after both aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

NINE: YOU SHOULD WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE HUNGRY TO EAT

Myth or fact: Myth

People who skip meals or eat erratically have a tendency to overeat to make up for the food they missed. And eating too few calories actually triggers your body to hold on to fat and burn fewer calories. "Hunger is a great indication that your metabolism is turned on," says Borden. "If your metabolism is turned on, you should feel hunger every three to four hours." Bottom line: Being hungry is a good sign, it means that your body's working the way it's supposed to, to burn off calories and keep running smoothly. On the other hand, starving yourself to the point where your body thinks it needs to conserve calories for the long haul is both unhealthy and works against your weight loss goal. So don't be afraid to eat when you're hungry -- just make wise choices.

TEN: THERE IS NO MIRACLE FAT-BURNING FOOD

Myth or fact: Fact

Not mustard, not grapefruit, not green tea, not celery. No food is going to do the work for you. While there are foods that might temporarily speed up your metabolism, it won't be in any sustained way that will impact weight loss. Simpson points out that "much of the data to support these claims stem from nutraceutical research or studies [where] people ingested very large quantities of the particular food or natural health supplements for an extended period of time." And don't try replicating those studies at home. Simpson warns that consuming large quantities of certain foods may offset the body's balance to digest, absorb or neutralize byproducts or toxins in the body. "For example, even though grapefruit has some benefits, it may also affect the way the body absorbs, processes and eliminates certain prescription drugs."

4 Money-Etiquette Questions Answered

When it comes to matters of money, tact is often in the eye of the beholder. Take some tips from etiquette experts on how to defuse these tricky situations.

1. At a restaurant, your friends suggest splitting the check evenly, but your meal costs less. If these are people you don’t meet with often, divvying up the check evenly is probably the best way to handle it. The same goes if you regularly eat out with certain friends and the price of your meal is usually about the same as theirs. “You’d hope that in a group of friends, this comes out in the wash,” says manners and lifestyle expert Thomas P. Farley. “You do not want to be the person who’s whipping out the calculator.”

If, however, you often go out with people who tend to order more-expensive meals and drinks than you do, it’s okay to ask your server for a separate check before the meal, says Daniel Post Senning, of the Emily Post Institute. In fact, your fellow diners may appreciate the move: They can order as much as they want without feeling as though they’re imposing on you.

2. You’re asked to pitch in for a group gift at the office, but there’s bad blood between you and the recipient. You’re under no obligation to participate or to explain why you’re turning down the request, Senning says. The organizer shouldn’t pressure you. If requests for money at the office become overwhelming, Farley suggests bringing up the issue with colleagues you trust. Chances are they feel the same way. In that case, you could suggest changing the practice rather than eliminating it—say, having a once-a-year office birthday party rather than buying a gift or going out to lunch for each one.

3. A friend asks you to support his favorite cause, but you’d rather choose your own charities. A polite no is an acceptable response, Senning says. You can tell your friend the reason if you wish, but you don’t have to. (Be diplomatic. If you’re refusing because you dislike the charity, don’t badmouth a cause that is obviously important to him.) Soften your response by complimenting your friend—for example, tell him that you admire his generosity. And keep in mind that if the people who are asking you for money have donated to your causes in the past, there’s a higher expectation that you’ll pitch in for theirs.

4. A family member asks you for a loan, but you’re not comfortable lending to her. In all likelihood, the one asking for the loan is as uncomfortable as you are. “It’s a real ego blow to have to go to friends and family for money,” Farley says. “It’s probably the last resort, and nobody wants to do it.” Be conciliatory as you decline, and don’t make up a reason for your refusal that isn’t true. For example, don’t say that you never lend money when you have done it in the past.

Help out in another way if you can. Farley suggests that you offer to be a job reference, for instance. (But avoid cosigning a loan, especially if you question the borrower’s ability to repay it. You’ll likely be asked to pay up if she defaults, and your credit rating would be on the line.) If you do lend money to someone, you can boost your chances of being repaid by putting the agreement in writing with explicit terms, such as interest required and payment due dates. LendingKarma.com and LoanBack.com set up legally binding loans for you, including payment schedules, recordkeeping and e-mail reminders; each site charges a $30 fee for those services. At Prosper.com, a borrower could take out a Friends and Family Loan from just you or from multiple people. The site arranges automatic bank-account withdrawals free and charges a closing fee as a percentage of the loan.

Best Times to Go Shopping

It's a simple fact that clothes wear out and styles change. This means that it's inevitable that everyone needs to repair or replace clothing once in a while - even those that absolutely despise shopping for new clothes. For frugal shoppers, this means buying clothes when you can get the very best prices, which can often take a bit of pre-planning. Luckily, there are a few simple guidelines you can follow when trying to get the best deals on new clothing.

Thursday Evenings

Stores typically reorganize their racks on Thursdays in order to replenish stocks for the weekend rush. Stores also generally mark down items that will be on sale over the weekend on Thursday evenings. If you want to beat the rush and get to those sales items first, Thursday night's a great time for bargain shoppers to hit the malls. You won't have to compete for the bargains like you would during the busy weekend either.

Six Weeks into the Season

If you're in need of clothes for this season, try to avoid giving in to the urge to buy all the exciting new arrivals when they're first in the store. About six or eight weeks after an item arrives, the price is marked down. If you can wait a measly six weeks, you're likely to get a better a price than if you buy immediately. One of the downsides is that some very popular items might sell out over the six-week period. Although, if you're purchasing from a chain store, you can always ask a sales associate to phone other locations to see if your item might be in stock elsewhere. Another great perk of waiting to buy is that it helps to curtail any impulse spending. If you've completely forgotten about that item before the time is up, chances are you didn't really need it anyway.

End of (or out of) Season

If your clothing size doesn't change much from year to year, stocking up on clothing at the end of the season is a great way to save money, and to have a good supply of new clothing available for next year. This works well for many classic or staple items, like suits, pants, jeans or cardigans that aren't prone to going out of style too quickly. Trendy items may be a bit more risky as they tend to become passé after a season or two.

Keep in mind that fashion seasons are different than the seasons marked on your calendar. When it comes to fashion, the new season usually begins about two months prior to the official change of season. Given this fact, if you wait until the end of the season, you should still be able to get a little bit of wear out of a new item before having to pack it away for next year.

In January or February, you can start looking for cold weather clothing. Jackets and winter accessories often start to go on sale around this time. August is when you'll find bathing suits, summer clothes and sandals on sale as the summer starts to come to a close. Athletic footwear often goes on sale in January when people are looking to get going with New Year's resolutions, though you'll often find sneakers on sale again in April. Jeans go on sale in October after the back-to-school rush has subsided.

Scout the Sales Online

Many popular clothing retailers allow consumers to subscribe to their newsletters online. Stores will often send out advance notice to their subscribers of big sales, or perhaps even allow subscribers to pre-shop at special events. If you get the newsletter, you'll know when all the promotions are happening at your favorite stores so you'll know when and how you can save on those clothing items you've been admiring. You may also find that some stores offer discounts at their online stores that may not be available at the brick-and-mortar stores.
Discount and off-Price Retailers

Not interested in planning your shopping trips according to seasons and sales? Discount and off-price clothing stores can be a great choice. These stores typically buy large volumes of clothing from stores that have excess inventory, are clearing space for new merchandise or have gone out of business. You may not always be able to find what you need, and you might find that some of the clothes on sale in these shops are completely out of season. But if you've got the time to spend and the desire to dig, you might find a few gems. Keep in mind that many of these discount retailers also sell staples like socks, hosiery, t-shirts, active wear and other items that are not as prone to seasonal changes.

The Bottom Line
Whether you find shopping for clothes to be the most entertaining activity in existence or whether you detest it more than anything, we all need clothing. Not only is it a good idea to buy once a season's already started, it's typically best to avoid buying too close to a major holiday when many clothing items are purchased as gifts. On the other hand, once these major holidays have passed, clothing items usually go on sale to liquidate the excess stock (sales after Christmas, for example). Though it's prudent to follow these guidelines for frugal clothes shopping, keep in mind that bargains can be found at any time during the year, and in every season. It's just a matter of scoping out the sales and having the courage to battle the crowds

Lexus tops as survey finds more auto dependability

By Dee-Ann Durbin
Associated Press – 22 hours ago

Lexus scored the best out of 32 brands, while Chrysler fared the worst.Lexus is the top performer in a survey of vehicle dependability released Wednesday, but most other brands also showed improvement in an industry that has reached historically high dependability levels.

Consulting firm J.D. Power and Associates polled 31,000 owners of 2009 model-year vehicles and rated brands by the number of problems owners have experienced in the last 12 months. Problems can range from stalling engines and transmission issues to peeling paint and electronics glitches.

Toyota PriusThe top complaint in this year's survey was excessive wind noise, followed by noisy brakes.

Lexus owners reported 86 problems per 100 vehicles. Porsche, Cadillac, Toyota and Scion rounded out the top five. The worst performers were Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Jaguar. Chrysler owners reported 192 problems per 100 vehicles.

The industry average was 132 problems per 100 vehicles, a 13 percent improvement from last year and the highest rate since the survey began in 1990. The results are particularly surprising since the industry was in turmoil in 2009. Both General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC went through bankruptcy that year, and U.S. auto sales fell to a 30-year low because of the recession.

Cadillac CTS"Despite facing immense challenges in 2009, automakers placed a keen focus on delivering outstanding levels of quality, which they understood would be essential to their long-term success," J.D. Power automotive vice president David Sargent said in a statement.

J.D. Power said 25 of 32 brands improved their scores, with Scion and Mini making the biggest leaps. Lincoln, Acura, Kia, Infiniti, Ram and Jaguar all saw their scores fall from a year ago. Buick's score stayed the same.

Mini CooperToyota Motor Corp. had eight winners at the segment level, the most of any automaker. The Toyota Yaris was the most dependable subcompact, the Toyota Prius was the best compact and the Toyota Tundra was the best pickup truck. Toyota began a series of safety recalls in late 2009, and some 2009 model-year vehicles were included in those recalls, but that wasn't reflected in the company's results.

Ford Motor Co. had three segment winners, including the Ford Fusion midsize car and Ford Explorer SUV, while General Motors Co. and Nissan Motor Co. had two winners each.

Boy genius's book reveals life in college at age 8

By JOHN ROGERS
....LOS ANGELES (AP) — The one thing 14-year-old Moshe Kai Cavalin dislikes is being called a genius.

All he did, after all, was enroll in college at age 8 and earn his first of two Associate of Arts degrees from East Los Angeles Community College at age 9, graduating with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Now, at 14, he's poised to graduate from UCLA this year. He's also just published an English edition of his first book, "We Can Do."

The 100-page guideline explains how other young people can accomplish what Cavalin did through such simple acts as keeping themselves focused and approaching everything with total commitment. He's hoping it will show people there's no genius involved, just hard work.

"That's always the question that bothers me," Cavalin, who turned 14 on Valentine's Day, says when the G-word is raised. "People need to know you don't really need to be a genius. You just have to work hard and you can accomplish anything."

And maybe cut out some of the TV.

Although he's a big fan of Jackie Chan movies, Cavalin says he limits his television time to four hours a week.

Not that he lacks for recreational activities or feels that his parents pressured him into studying constantly. He writes in "We Can Do" of learning to scuba dive, and he loves soccer and martial arts. He used to participate in the latter sport when he was younger, winning trophies for his age group, until his UCLA studies and his writing made things a little too hectic.

Indeed one of the key messages of his book is to stay focused and to not take on any endeavor half-heartedly.

"I was able to reach the stars, but others can reach the 'Milky Way," he tells readers.

It was a professor at his first institution of higher learning, East Los Angeles City College, who inspired him, Cavalin says. He didn't like the subject but managed to get an A in it anyway, by applying himself and seeing how enthusiastic his teacher, Richard Avila, was about the subject.

Avila, he says, inspired him to write a book explaining his methods for success so he could motivate others.

It took four years to finish, in part because Cavalin, whose mother is Chinese, decided to publish it in Chinese, and doing the translation himself was laborious.

Han Shian Culture Publishing of Taiwan put the book in print, and it did well in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, as well in several bookstores in Southern California's Asian communities. He then brought it out in English for the U.S. market.

Because of his heavy study load, Cavalin has had little opportunity to promote the book, other than a signing at UCLA, where he also lives in student housing with his parents and attends the school on a scholarship.

After earning his bachelor's degree, the math major plans to enroll in graduate school with hopes of eventually earning a doctorate.

After that, he's not so sure. He points out that he's still just barely a teenager.

"Who knows?" he says, chuckling at the thought of what lies ahead in adulthood. "That's a very distant future, and I'm pretty much planning for just the next few years. That's too far into the future for me to see."

....World's Worst Dating Advice: 8 Terrible Tips from Love Experts

World's Worst Dating Advice: 8 Terrible Tips from Love Experts
Anyone have advice on love? Anyone besides the guy in the furry hat and goggles? There's questionable dating advice and then there's unquestionably bad dating advice. This Valentine's day we've hand selected some of the worst, off-color, and unintentionally amusing feedback from self-proclaimed experts in the art of romance. In an over-saturated market of relationship how-to's, it's almost easier to isolate the worst advice and avoid it at all costs. We can't promise it will lead to love, but at least you'll be able to live with yourself.

Bad Advice #1: Speak inaudibly

Men love it when they can barely hear a woman's voice, even when she's speaking directly to them. This useless nugget from the recently published "The Geisha Secret: Ancient Dating Rituals Proven to Win a Modern Man's Heart." Author Hanako extols the virtues of being a woman of few words and much face paint. "Don't speak too loudly. Kyoto Geishas speak a special dialect that is much softer than the modern Japanese language because it is more attractive. A loud, harsh voice is unfeminine." Know what else is unfeminine? Confidence. "Avoid appearing aggressive. It's okay to be confident but soften your confidence so it's unthreatening."

Bad Advice #2: Act like everything is such a coincidence...an insulting coincidence.

Women aren't the only targets for bad advice. Our boy Mystery (i.e. the former TV dating guru who looks suspiciously like the lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots) has created the world's worst pick-up tactics for guys. Overall, he believes women turn to jelly when a man speaks sends mixed signals in under 10 seconds. Here's his sample conversation tactic from "The Massive Complete Book of Mystery's Pick-up Artist Routines":

Guy: "What nationality are you?"

Girl: "French"

Guy: "Seriously? No Way!!! The girl I had the biggest crush on in high school was French!I Can't even talk to you now."

An important clincher, as you may have noticed above, is for guys to express that their own enthusiasm has in effect totally turned them off to a woman. Confused? Here's another example:

Guy: "If you could be anything in the world with no chance of failure what would you be? And don't say ''princess' haa."

Girl: "Um an actress."

Guy "Really? When I was little I wanted to grow up and be a magician!...I bet you'd be an amazing actress. But what if you get more attention than I? I can't even hang out with you now."

Here's what would happen next, not according to Mystery, but according to reality:

Girl: "That was weird. What just happened?"

Girl's Friend: "I have no idea."

Bad Advice #3: Don't act like you won an election, or anything

"In our household, Jim is the president, and I am the vice president," writes Real Housewives of Orange County's Alexis Bellino on her blog. "This is what we have found to make our lives run most smoothly. Please understand that this does not mean that I do not have my say or that I don't have my opinions." That's awesome that she gets to have her opinions, but let's be perfectly clear as to who has the veto power.

Bad Advice #4: Don't cook for him until you're married

"No title, no chicken," Tionna Tee Smalls, author of the gruesomely titled,"Men Love Abuse: The Guide to Losing the Nice Girl Image & Getting the Man You Want," advised in an interview with S2S Magazine. "You don't cook for a guy that you're dating. You don't know nothing about this guy to be sitting here and cooking for him. He needs to earn that. If he wants you to cook for him, he'll make you his girl." It's like the old saying goes, why buy the cow when you can get the chicken cooked for free.

Bad Advice #5: Stop nagging and just let your husband enjoy his affair

The dating doesn't stop when you're married, according to a nifty advice book for couples (but mostly men) called, "Your Affair: How to Manage Every Aspect of Your Extramarital Relationship with Passion, Discretion and Dignity." In addition to over-reasoning why cheating is totally natural and perfectly within your rights as a man, there's a chapter just for the suspicious wife who ruins everything. If you think your husband is having an affair, author H. Cameron Barnes suggests the following tactic. "Don't investigate. Don't ask. Don't tell...[Confronting your spouse] is a futile exercise that will only make yourself feel more miserable than you already do. It's true that some men crave and are fascinated by variety and isn't a heck of a lot that you can do about it." Any questions? Yes this book was published this past year.
Bad Advice #6: Date like an aggressive realtor

In an interview about her book, "Secrets of Jewish Mother," Jill Zarin (another Real Housewife with a thing or two to say about love) extols the virtues of online dating. But buyer beware: before you agree to an online date, Zarin suggests you do a credit check, "to make sure they aren't pretending to be someone else." If there's anything a man loves about a woman he's never met, it's her eagerness to check his credit score. Zarin also compares dating to working on commission: "Like a good sales girl, never leave a cold lead. If somebody says, 'I have a guy for you,' you have to go on every single fix up you get. You are not allowed to say no-even if you don't like him, you may like his friend." Remember the matchmaker is always right.

Bad Advice #7: Over-think your outfit

"The Geisha Secret" offers another gem, this time in preparation for meeting the man of your dreams who thinks talking to women is icky. "Wear feminine clothing and shoes: skirts, dresses high heals...Every time you get dressed, ask yourself if you look feminine." If the answer is no, lock yourself in the closet to shield others from your hideous lack of maiden-flowery-ness.

Bad Advice #8: Have your feelings surgically removed from your brain

Jezebel called our attention to some advice from Samantha Daniels, a New York City matchmaker, on how date a Wall Street guy. Ironically, she makes a better case for why NOT to a Wall Street guy. But if you're really curious what Daniels thinks it takes to attract a man who takes the six train all the way downtown, know this: it's not going to be pretty. "You need to be prepared that the volatility of the markets might make your guy's mood unpredictable," writes Daniels on CNBC, "especially on a day that his personal portfolio went down dramatically." So unchecked mood disorders, unpredictable bouts of rage. That all?

Unfortunately not. He really hates when you have friends. "You need to be accommodating of his schedule and time constraints or he will get frustrated and find another woman," writes Daniels.

Also, ladies, please shut your trap. He doesn't want to hear it. "Tell stories that are short and sweet because the mind of a Wall Street man is always moving so rapidly and focusing on so many different things that his attention span for social stories is very short."

Finally, if you really want to seal the deal with this mythological figure, you may need to quit your job. "Wall Street men tend to be attracted to women who are in industries other than Wall Street," adds Daniels. "This does not mean that if you work on Wall Street, you won't end up with a Wall Street man, however his eye tends to be looking towards non-Wall Street women." In other words, just become a Geisha.

The 10 worst V-Day gifts…

We know what you’re thinking: Valentine’s Day is a commercial holiday. It’s forced. It’s too much pressure. But if you’re dating this month, you’ll probably wind up roaming the aisles for a gift to give your date on February 14th. And, “like it or not, Valentine’s Day becomes a test in which you have to show you’ve been paying attention to the other person’s taste,” says Christine Silvestri, founder of Urban Shopping Adventures, which gives tours of LA’s shopping districts.

But choosing the right gift can be quite a challenge: Too many frazzled sweethearts reach into the Valentine’s void for gift ideas and come up with something that’s just plain wrong. To help you avoid joining their ranks, we present the 10 worst presents possible — and what to give your sweetie instead.

1. Ye olde bouquet of red roses and baby’s breath

What’s wrong with it: Yes, you went out and got something nice and romantic. Unfortunately, certain types of flowers are the equivalent of a shrug because they are so predictable and clichéd... and the rose bouquet falls into this category quite neatly. Says Kristin, 40, of Lake Geneva, WI, “I was dating a guy who said he adored all my quirks and my adventurous spirit. Then he turned around and gave me a big bunch of roses with the lacy white stuff for Valentine’s. It was embarrassing, because I’m so not the kind of woman you give that to! It made me feel as if he didn’t really know me or get what I was all about.” Browse Local Singles at Match.com on Yahoo!

I am a: Man Woman Seeking a: Man Woman Near: Indeed, Frank Leusner, manager of Delphinium Home, a popular gift shop in New York City, says this of the classic red and white bouquet: “There’s absolutely no thought behind it. It’s a copout because it’s just so expected.” Obviously, a gift that says “I’ve never paid attention to your tastes” or “This would also work well on a tombstone” is not a Valentine’s Day message worth sending. Or, consider the way Brittney Cason, relationship advisor for Elevate magazine in Charlotte, NC, puts it: “A gift should never make a woman wonder if you picked it out at the pharmacy while waiting to get a prescription filled on the way over.”

A simple solution: Ask one of your more florally-inclined friends to name a cool-looking bloom (think calla lily, parrot tulip, Gerbera daisy) and then buy three dozen of those. Or order up a monochromatic bouquet of various blooms in your honey’s favorite color — arrangements look especially striking when the flowers are all one shade.

2. A box of assorted chocolates

What’s wrong with it: “Taking candy from guys you know on Valentine’s Day is the only thing more risky than taking candy from strangers,” says Amy Borkowsky, author of Statements: True Tales of Life, Love, and Credit Card Bills. Let’s face it — not all chocolates are created equal. And while a variety pack of sweets shows that you’re trying to cover the bases, the dark (or milk or white) secret is that some of these morsels will be, well, icky. Do the math: Out of every box of 15 assorted chocolates, a woman will probably have three or so favorites. And there’s all that crazy, frou-frou wrapping as part of the picture — enough satin and ribbon to fashion a child’s “princess bride” Halloween costume. So what would you rather get? Three chocolates you want and 21 you don’t — along with a lot of excess red metallic cardboard? Or a small box of something you actually like?

A simple solution: This is where a hefty dose of your sweetie’s favorite sweet can come in handy. “Get creative with your packaging or give it as a gift within a gift — who wouldn’t like that?!” says Silvestri. “If you’re dating a Reese’s peanut butter cup gal, she’d rather have a bag of those in a nice hand-painted bowl or wrapped in a soft scarf than a lifetime supply of random chocolates in a heart-shaped box.”

3. Jewelry in a ring-sized box

What’s wrong with it: In truth, most women love something glittery. But the biggest jewelry mistake a man can make is anything in a ring-size box — be it earrings, a pendant, or a 1 oz. tube of saffron — that’s not, in fact, an engagement ring. Women know there are five key probable proposal days (namely, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s, and her birthday), so giving her false hope on one of them is cruel. “When a girl sees that box, she’s either going to freak out because she’s not ready or hope that it is the ring and then be disappointed, so it’s lose-lose,” says Cason.

A simple solution: Even if you do get her, say, pink sapphire earrings — which we’re sure she’ll love — wrap them in a shirt box just so she doesn’t get the wrong idea.

4. Something girlie and decorative like a sachet, a candle holder, a silver wishing stone…

What’s wrong with it: We’re talking about things like rhinestone-studded soap dishes, elaborate aromatherapy dispensing devices, and other stuff people would never buy for themselves. “Anything red and pink and cutesy often winds up being kind of cheap and useless when you look at it on February 15th — the luster is gone,” says Borkowsky. “And any solid red trinket risks saying, ‘I love you — just enough to get you Christmas stuff at 75 percent off.’” Recalls Adrienne, 35, of Cincinnati, “My boyfriend tends to get me things like little heart-shaped pink velvet pincushions or a wreath of red satin hearts for Valentine’s Day, because he thinks that’s in keeping with the theme of the day. I wish I could tell him to stop wasting his money this way. I never use that stuff!” So before plunking down your dough, ask yourself, “Do I see this gift bringing my date pleasure and enjoyment... or do I see it winding up in his or her guest room?” The answer ought to make your purchase decision very clear.

A simple solution: “Bath products are a great choice,” says Leusner. “You can find scents and formulas that suit your boyfriend or girlfriend’s personality, and most people really enjoy using them.”

5. A cute stuffed animal bearing a message of love

What’s wrong with it: We’ve never heard anyone admit to expressing themselves best through plush koalas, yet that medium remains popular for many a romantic utterance. “It’s so cheesy,” says Leusner. “When you buy that gift, it could be for anyone — even a child. What’s an adult going to do with a stuffed animal?” We’ll tell you what: stuffed animals get tucked somewhere out-of-the-way. And when the romance dies, the Stuffed Bear of Love serves no practical purpose, so the recipient feels pathetic keeping it around as a reminder of her ex (that’s you) and donates it to a children’s charity.

A simple solution: Cut to the chase and make a donation in your honey’s name to a charity you think he or she respects. Now that’s a thoughtful gift.

6. Racy sleepwear

What’s wrong with it: Look, we all know that when you buy someone underwear, it’s more for you than for her. So don’t use Valentine’s Day as your excuse to present all the secret fantasies you’ve been keeping hidden away for the last 364 days. “A lot of the lingerie you see in stores for Valentine’s Day is opposite of women’s tastes,” warns Silvestri. Something that’s not her style can make her feel uncomfortable (figuratively and literally) — and criticized. The point of V-Day is to make couples feel happy about being together, so the last thing you want to say is “I don’t think you’re sexy enough — put this on.”

A simple solution: Buy a black or lacy version of a type of undergarment she already wears, if you two are intimate enough to know that kind of thing. At least you know you’re somewhere within her comfort zone. Or acknowledge the weather outside with something that will actually caress her skin for more hours than you: long, silk underwear.

7. Anything that could be considered a small appliance

What’s wrong with it: A toaster, a humidifier, a yogurt maker... trust us, if she needed it so badly, she’d have gotten it already. “Being too practical is a real romance killer — no one wants anything with an electrical cord for Valentine’s Day,” says Silvestri. (Disclaimer: This rule can be waived if you’re buying an mp3 player or pre-loading a digital camera with shots of yourself holding up signs that say “Will you marry me?”). Here’s how one recipient puts it: “My boyfriend knows I love to cook, especially Asian food. But when I unwrapped a rice cooker last Valentine’s Day,” says Amy, 39, of Portland, ME, “it just felt very roommate-like or haus-frau-ish... as if he didn’t see me as this amazing woman who rocks his world.”

A simple solution: Get her something she absolutely does not need but that you know she’d love, whether it’s a helicopter tour of the city or a pair of microfiber massaging slippers. C’mon, it’s a day for romance, which is supposed to be fun — think about her definition of that and shop accordingly.

8. A nice bottle of cologne or perfume

What’s wrong with it: It’s a time-honored gift, and all that fancy packaging might actually make you think you’re buying something your pumpkin will love. But the same spritz that reminds you of a splendid beach holiday in Europe may smell like bath day at the zoo to your beloved. Problem is, “Perfume choice is so specific that it’s a real challenge,” says Leusner. “It’s almost impossible to know what smells good to another person.” And let us not forget that nothing says “You smell weird” better than a bottle of concentrated fragrance. Recalls Danielle, 29, of Oakbrook, IL: “I like really feminine floral perfumes. When my boyfriend gave me this intense, musky stuff one year, I felt like, ‘Do you not know how I like to smell? or are you trying to tell me you wished I smelled like someone else?’ It really did a number on my confidence!”

A simple solution: Buy a soap, aftershave, or other body product in a fragrance that your loved one already has, or go for a high-end unscented body lotion.

9. A tie

What’s wrong with it: “Women actually have a harder time than men shopping at Valentine’s Day, because there are fewer gift options for men than for women,” says Silvestri. “Still, a tie is a big yawn.” It’s amazing how many women complain about generic gifts and then hit the tie aisle for their man. At best, the tie is by a great designer — which the guy likely won’t care about. At worst, it’s a novelty accessory featuring pigs, the Blues Brothers, or some other unwearable gimmick. But usually, it’s just “about” the color the guy usually wears, meaning he already owns a dozen of ’em.
A simple solution: Head a little further into the menswear section and pick out a great scarf instead — it’s more casual and therefore more wearable; some fun or extra-soft (cashmere, maybe) socks; or another item that shows a dash more originality.

10. A gift certificate

What’s wrong with it: It’s one thing to not know exactly what your cutie might want, but it’s another to throw in the towel entirely. “Gift cards are too impersonal and disappointing,” says Borkowsky. “There’s no actual gift, yet you know how much someone spent. It’s like saying, ‘Happy Valentine’s Day, honey — I got you a price tag!’” Any gift for a service or store your partner doesn’t already frequent could be read as your attempt to change the person to your pleasing.

A simple solution: Take the money, reread our suggestions above, and give gift-giving your best shot. Or, to earn bonus points, call your honey’s best pal and ask what to get — that will make a great impression on many levels.

Bank of America Declared Live Customer Dead for 3 Years?

Arthur Livingston, of Prosperity, S.C., may feel prosperous and alive, but his credit report says, "File not scored because subject is deceased."

That's because Livingston's bank, Bank of America, has been reporting him as deceased to the three major credit agencies since May 2009, he said.

Bank of America has still not resolved the issue, even after media attention, causing headaches for Livingston, 39, and his family in South Carolina.

A regional manager of a chemical company, Livingston, discovered the dilemma when he tried to obtain a loan from a mortgage company in October. The problem may have begun when Livingston, who said he has been a Bank of America customer for 14 years, sold his home in May 2009.

Five months since he discovered the problem, Bank of America still does not have a solution, and his mortgage company has not been able to obtain his credit score to give him a loan for his new home, which he said is the "major problem" with being "deceased." He also fears the inactivity on his credit will negatively affect his credit score.

A spokeswoman for Bank of America told ABC News on Thursday said the company is working with Livingston directly to "resolve this issue as quickly as possible."

Livingston said he regularly pays off his credit card bill in full, including $2,000 to $4,000 in travel expenses for work. But none of that, he fears, is being recorded on his credit record.

"[Bank of America] is well aware that the account is very active on a daily basis," he said.

That has been "frustrating" for Livingston and his family's plan for their new home, which was supposed to begin construction from mid-December. He was hoping the home would be half finished by now.

"It's been a complete waste of time," he said of the "inexcusable" mistake.

He, his wife, son and daughter, 8 and 5, respectively, have been living in a rental home while they wait. Construction of the home is estimated to take four to six months, weather pending. The Livingstons had hoped to move into their new home by April.

"Obviously, that's not going to be remotely possible," he said.

Livingston has done everything from talk to his local branch to emailing Bank of America's CEO Brian Moynihan two weeks ago, only to have company representatives tell him his issue has been bounced around or "escalated."

"I'm not trying to be overdramatic," he said. "I'm not legal-seeking. I've been patient for 90 days."

That's when he contacted the local television station, WISTV-10. When the news station aired a segment about him on Tuesday, a company representative said it would contact him directly. He heard from the bank on Thursday, when he said a representative said she wanted to "touch base" with him and that the right people were trying to resolve the issue.

"It's inexcusable. She's making it sound like now it can be a quick fix. It should have been a quick fix three and half months ago," he said. "I've really reached my limit."

Victor Searcy, director of fraud operations for IDentity Theft 911, said one possible reason for the mix-up is Livingston's name could be common, and Bank of America may have mixed up his account with another one associated with a deceased person.

"Regardless of the situation, it shouldn't take 100 days to investigate and clear," Searcy said. "He can obviously present identification and appear in person to provide 'proof of life.'"

Tom Quinn, credit scoring expert with Credit.com, said most credit scoring systems have logic that prevents a score from being generated when a credit report is requested if there is any indication of a deceased status.

Once a bank reports a customer deceased to the credit bureaus, until the code that indicates a deceased status is removed no credit score will be generated when that consumer's report is requested, he said.

"Just another good reason why consumers should periodically check their credit report for accuracy and follow the disputing-inaccurate-information process if they find this kind of inaccurate information on the file," he said.

Livingston, who has two checking accounts, a savings account, and two college savings tuition plans for his children, said he plans no longer to be a Bank of America customer after the issue is resolved. He is staying with the bank until then.

He fears worse treatment if he is no longer a customer, though, he said, "I don't know how they could give me any less attention."

While his friends first joked about the situation, they now sympathize.

"It's gone on so long, it's comical but not funny," he said.

Meanwhile, he said, his wife is "completely stressed out."

"It's a helpless feeling. It has taken a toll on both on us because we were hoping to start building a house," he said. "We knew we were going to move eventually before we started building. But once we started building, we had no idea that this was going to happen."

Kick-Start Your Diet: 8-Step Plan

1. First, there must be a plan for food intake - aka your diet. If you eat haphazardly throughout the day, then I honestly can't help you. However, if you're using one of the eDiets food plans, then you can easily determine the amount of calories you take in per day, as well as the ratios of protein, carbohydrates and fats. In fact, all that work is already done for you by eDiets.

This is vital because you need to know what you're consuming in order to manipulate your program; you can't make wild guesses.

2. You must have a workout plan that includes weight training, cardiovascular exercise and flexibility. The number of workouts need not exceed five days of cardio (no more than an hour) and three to four days of weight training, unless you're a competitive athlete.

3. Make sure you know and record your scale weight and measurements. Contrary to popular belief, there's nothing wrong with weighing yourself once per week. Even if you get a body composition test (also called body fat tests), you'll still have to step on a scale.
4. Remain on the program for three weeks and don't make any changes at all. If you start reducing food or increasing activity before the three-week point, you might sabotage your efforts. It's important to have a clear starting point.

Some people stay on a specific program for months and never make a change - that's insanity. After three weeks, there is absolutely no reason you shouldn't have some degree of fat loss.

If you're losing up to 1 to 2 pounds per week, you're on the right track. Even a bit less is fine.

If you haven't lost weight, it's time to make a change.

5. At this point, I do not recommend adding more activity and manipulating calories. Do one or the other - not both. It's vital to have an understanding of what's working. The change in parameters needs to be tightly controlled. Reduce your daily caloric intake by 150 (assuming it does not fall below 1,200 calories).

Here comes the tricky part. In some cases, you might not be eating enough, so calories would need to actually increase. You can't work out six days per week for 90 minutes and take in 1,200 calories per day. You most likely won't lose fat - the body will rebel. This is one of the reasons I always tell members to call eDiets nutrition support and always mention their activity level. We need that information to increase or decrease calories.

I realize you may be confused as to the lowering or increasing of calories, but that's why we're here.
6. If you haven't lost weight in two weeks, I would then increase activity -but do not decrease or increase food intake. Again, exercise tight control - you want to know the formula that works for you.

7. Allow 10 days to pass. Most people are losing fat by now and have the formula for their personal success. It may sound like a hassle, but it's actually not that many weeks when you consider your entire lifetime.

8. If you're still at a plateau, it may be time to shift the ratios of protein, carbohydrates and fats. It's possible that the food plan you're using isn't working efficiently with your biochemistry.
It may take 6-8 weeks to break the plateau (for some), but there is a solution. Yes, it takes some work and effort. However, once you have the formula, you're home free. Always check with your doctor prior to beginning any exercise program.

Steps for Rebuilding Credit

Know Your Starting Point

Obtain a copy of your credit report from all three credit bureaus so that you have a clear understanding of what is says about you and your current credit scores.

Develop A Plan

If there are errors on your credit report, have the credit bureaus investigate and correct them. Set goals and time frames for future major credit endeavors.

Bankruptcy Today – Homeowner Tomorrow

If you recently filed bankruptcy or if you don’t have any open credit, it is necessary to have new positive items being reported on your credit report. Try to obtain several new accounts or sources such a secured credit card, department store cards or being put on someone else’s account as an authorized user. The lower your starting credit scores, the more your need to have positive items reporting.

For secured cards remember the following:

•Never carry over balances as the interest rates are very high.

•Purchase one thing on credit that you would normally pay cash for – say for $20.00 and as soon as the bill arrives write the check and pay the bill. If paid in full during the 25 day grace period no interest is charged. Follow this practice consistently and NEVER miss a payment.

Keep Older Accounts Open

If you already have credit open, keep the accounts you have had for the longest period of time. Even if there were late payments on it in the past, pay it on time now and the length of time it has been open will help your credit.

Make Your Payments On Time

Always.
Pay Down Your Credit Card Balance

Target to have the total amount of outstanding revolving debt at 40%, or less, of the total available credit limits.

Once new positive sources are created, avoid all unnecessary inquiries – don’t fill out any additional applications for credit.

For home purchase or refinance, old collections/judgments/unpaid taxes/ unpaid child support/ must be dealt with. Look at the date of the item, compare to statute of limitations for that item, and plan a strategy to address each.

So in 1998, Shep Murray, an advertising account executive, and Ian Murray, who worked at a small public relations firm, quit their jobs within 10 minutes of each other. They took cash advances on their credit cards and, despite being told how “dumb” their idea was, started Vineyard Vines — a tie company based on Martha’s Vineyard. Or, as the brothers like to say, they decided to trade in their business suits for bathing suits by selling ties so they wouldn’t have to wear them.

At first they sold their ties one at a time out of their backpacks, on the beach, on boats and in bars. They sold out of 800 ties within the first week. They quickly re-ordered, paid off their debt and moved into their first office. More than a decade later, the business is now an entire clothing line.

There are now 18 freestanding Vineyard Vine retail stores around the country, and the line can be found in about 500 stores. The company is projecting about $100 million in sales for 2011.

Rick Wetzel and Bill Phelps, Wetzel’s Pretzels

Photo: Wetzel's PretzelsRick Wetzel and Bill Phelps were working for Nestle when the concept for Wetzel’s Pretzels was born. The two were on a business trip when Wetzel told Phelps about an idea his wife had — to make big, soft pretzels to sell at the mall. That night, they sat at a bar and drew out their business plan on napkin.

Wetzel sold his Harley Davidson to help raise funds for the fledgling business, which they started in their spare time. They brought in a partner to help create the recipe in Phelps’ kitchen, and when it came time to open shop they persuaded a mall landlord to come to the house to try their creation. The landlord liked what he tasted and rented Wetzel’s Pretzels its first store.

That was 1994. About a year later, Wetzel and Phelps got their lucky break when they were offered a severance package from Nestle. They opened up several more stores before deciding to franchise in 1996. There are now 250 stores nationwide, with locations set to open in Japan and India this year. System-wide sales are more than $100 million and same-store sales were up 9 percent in 2011.

Terry Finley, West Point Thoroughbreds

The horse, named Sunbelt, won its first race, and Finley was hooked. He quit his insurance job and took a chance on his passion. Armed with credit cards and personal savings, he started West Point Thoroughbreds with his wife.

“Taking what you love to do and making a profession out of it is so much better than just working to make a living,” Finley says .

West Point Thoroughbreds now buys 20 to 25 horses a year, forming groups of investors who can profit when the horses win, breed and sell. Since 2007, its horses have won more than 20 percent of their races, with purses totaling more than $16 million and counting. Annual sales are near $7 million.

Dana Sinkler and Alex Dzieduszycki, Terra Chips

Photo: Hain CelestialDana Sinkler and Alex Dzieduszycki were working for star chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten at his four-star restaurant, Lafayette, in New York when they decided to strike out on their own and start a catering business. They were looking to create a signature dish to serve at the bar, since it’s the place people first visit at a party. But they wanted something different from the elaborate crudité platters that were popular at the time. So in 1990, they experimented with frying different vegetable roots in the kitchen of Sinkler’s tiny apartment and struck gold.

The vegetable chips were a hit, and soon the pair brought Terra Chips into stores. In 1995, a private equity group bought 51 percent of the company, and in 1998 Hain Celestial bought Terra Chips as part of an $80 million bundle deal that included three other companies. At the time, Dzieduszycki says, Terra Chips had $23 million in annual sales.

Sinkler and Dzieduszycki have moved on to new ventures. Sinkler has started a new restaurant called Hubee D’s. Dzieduszycki began Julian’s Recipe, a frozen waffle line.

Adam Lowry and Eric Ryan, Method

Photo: MethodAdam Lowry was working as a climate scientist and Eric Ryan was in advertising when they decided to leave their jobs to develop the environmentally friendly cleaning product company, Method. At the time there weren’t many choices when it came to cleaning products that didn’t contain harsh chemicals. So the two childhood friends did their research, and Lowry even mixed chemicals in the sink of their apartment. They maxed out their credit cards, scrounged together $200,000 from family and friends and started Method in 2000.

Method has become one of the fastest-growing private companies in America, with over 100 products — from hand soaps to dish soaps to bathroom cleaners. The company has gross revenue north of $100 million.
